A/C & Refrigeration Technician

Purpose
The Air Conditioning and Refrigeration program seeks to educate and provide guided learning experiences to individuals interested in entering this rapidly developing field. The goal of the program is for graduates to be employable as entry level service technicians in residential and light commercial air conditioning, refrigeration, and heating.

Students will learn about the refrigeration cycle, tools of the trade, instrument usage and application, wiring schematic reading and building, electrical controls and switches, refrigerant recovery, reclaiming and recycling, installation practices, troubling shooting procedures on electrical and sealed systems plus employee/employer relations, job hunting skills, resume building and information related to operating a small business.

Admission Requirements
Students are admitted to the Air Conditioning and Refrigeration program on a first-come, first-served basis. Students must be high school or GED graduates to be admitted. If a student is not a high school or GED graduate, he/she must see the Dean of Admissions and Student Services, who may admit the student under individual approval or the Ability-to-Benefit program by taking the TASP, RLEE or Nelson Denny Test and scoring an acceptable score.

In order to be admitted, students must:

1. complete an admission application.

2. file a copy of the high school transcript with the Registrar's Office.

3. enroll in the student insurance plan sponsored by the college or furnish evidence that they are covered by hospitalization insurance for the duration of the course.

Program of Study
The Air Conditioning and Refrigeration program carries two certificate options. The first is a one-year "Basic Certificate" covering residential air conditioning and refrigeration study areas. The one-year certificate is TASP-waived. Students who wish to continue for an additional year may attain the two-year "Certificate of Completion" that covers light commercial air conditioning and refrigeration. The two-year certificate is not TASP-waived. For either certificate, the student who completes the required courses must make a formal application for graduation. (See Curricula Section.) Full time day students are scheduled for all courses in a given semester. With instructor consent, part-time students may enroll for individual courses as offered in the day or evening.
