Student Ambassadors Training Guide


Introduction

When people look at student ambassadors at Southwest Texas Junior College, they do not see a single student. They see the entire SWTJC. Student Ambassadors have the responsibility of portraying a positive image of SWTJC to every person who visits the institution. For a short while, student ambassadors in any capacity are SWTJC to a visitor, prospective student, guest, or benefactor of SWTJC. Very often student ambassadors will be the only person with whom these visitors to SWTJC will interact with on campus. For this reason student ambassadors are committed to providing services that enhance the development and advancement of Southwest Texas Junior College. More importantly, the purpose of student ambassadors is to give an opportunity to a select group of student leaders to practice skills necessary to be a viable commodity of Southwest Texas Junior College, and to promote learning outside the SWTJC classroom. Therefore, it is imperative that student ambassadors be fully informed on SWTJC history, regulations, and campus knowledge. As you can see the role of student ambassadors is very important to the operation of our college.

Duties of the Student Ambassador

The New Student Ambassadors Organization offers tours daily, group tours, and has a multitude of information available to students interested in SWTJC. They are involved in on campus events, tours to prospective students, community functions, and marketing activities.

Duties as a Student Ambassador:

• Conduct Campus Tours and Campus Visits

• Participate in fundraising activities and community events

• Assist with New Student Orientation

• Assist with College Days and College Nights

• Represent SWTJC to new students, parents, and the community

• Assists with Registration at the Uvalde Campus

• Assists with Transfer Day

• Assists with Safe and Sober Seminar

• Assists with Commencement

Student Ambassadors Organization Guidelines

Student Ambassadors need to be committed to providing services that enhance the development and advancement of Southwest Texas Junior College. Student Ambassadors stand for personal integrity, the liberal education of the whole person, the dignity and worth of all individuals, service to others, and the development of pride and moral for the college.

Professional Commitment

Student ambassadors agree to fulfill their professional responsibilities, supporting the mission and goals of Southwest Texas Junior College.

Management of College Resources

Student Ambassadors wisely use funds, equipment, facilities, and other resources and acknowledge they are accountable for their proper use. Student Ambassadors inform appropriate college officials of conditions that may be potentially disruptive or damaging to the mission of the college, students, faculty, staff, and property. The use of the college phone lines to make personal long distance calls is strictly prohibited. Eating while with prospective students is prohibited. Chewing gum is prohibited.

Conflict of Interest

Student Ambassadors fulfill their professional responsibilities with fairness and impartiality by showing equal consideration and respect to individuals regardless of status or position. In keeping with the mission of Southwest Texas Junior College, we appreciate others regardless of race, religion, creed, gender, age, national origin, sexual orientation, and physical ability. Student Ambassadors neither engage in nor tolerate harassment in any form.

Responsible Behavior

Student Ambassadors demonstrate and promote responsible behavior by supporting actions that enhance personal growth and development. Student Ambassadors foster a climate of collegiality and mutual respect in work relationships.

Integrity of Information and Confidentiality

Student Ambassadors ensure that confidentiality is maintained with respect to all privileged information.

Participation in Social Activities

Student Ambassadors are aware of and take responsibility for all pertinent ethical principles and college policies when planning and attending social activities. Regardless of age, student ambassadors do not consume alcohol at college-sanctioned events.

Development and Advancement of the College Community

Student Ambassadors promote a sense of community among all areas of Southwest Texas Junior College. Student Ambassadors work cooperatively with students, faculty, staff, and others outside of the college community to address the common goals of academic excellence for Southwest Texas Junior College.

Dress Code

The personal appearance of each student ambassador is a major part of the impression prospective students, guests, or benefactors have of the College. When people look at student ambassadors, they do not see a single student ambassador. They see the entire Southwest Texas Junior College. To our guests, a neat, well-groomed student ambassador means a quality, reputable college. The following dress code has been developed to ensure student ambassadors provide service of impeccable quality to Southwest Texas Junior College.

Shirts: Shirts must be worn free of wrinkles and tucked in when appropriate. They should not be faded, with intact hems, and free from tears and holes.

Pants, Skirts, and Shorts: Pants, skirts, and shorts must be worn free from wrinkles. They should not be faded, with intact hems, and free from tears and holes. They should not be made of chambray, clinging fabrics, crepe satins, leather, sheer fabrics, or suede. Skirts and shorts should be an appropriate length for bending, stooping, and reaching. Leggings, and sweat pants are unacceptable. Clothing with the insignia or name of another university or college is not permitted.

Shoes: Dress shoes must be worn with formal uniform. Athletic shoes and sandals may be worn when appropriate. Coordinating socks, hosiery, or stockings must be worn at all times. Flip-flops, and other open toes shoes are unacceptable at public events or while working during regular hours.

Body Art: Visible tattoos are unacceptable (Body art required for religious observances is exempted.)

Body Piercing: Earrings are acceptable. All other visible piercing jewelry (tongue, nose, eyebrow, etc.) is unacceptable.

Caps and Hats: Caps and hats are unacceptable. (Head coverings required for religious observances are exempted.)

Hair: Hair should be neatly combed and arranged. Extremes in dyeing, bleaching, tinting, frosting, and streaking are unacceptable.

Jewelry: Excessive jewelry is unacceptable.

Make-Up: Excessive make-up and nail polish is unacceptable.

Nametags: Nametags must be worn on the upper right corner at all times.

Cell Phones, Pagers, Electronic Media

The use of cell phones, pagers or any other type of electronic media is prohibited during working hours.

General Rights and Regulations

Any Student Ambassador shall be held accountable by the rules and regulations. Every student ambassador is required to have a 2.0 every semester and be in good academic and disciplinary standing with SWTJC.
